Rotary drilling rig is used for drilling rock formations with rock hardness coefficient f≤6 in open pit mines, and can also drill hard interlayer rocks with f=7-11. When drilling, the rotary torque and axial pressure are applied to make the drill bit rotate and feed to cut the rock.

The drill bit is attached to the bottom of the drill pipe. When it rotates, it can break the rock formations. And the drilling fluid is pumped down the pipe and back up the annulus. Meanwhile, it carries debris to the surface.
The rotary table or top drive provides rotational force. The drawworks controls the hoisting and lowering of the drill string.
Advanced rigs are featured with automated pipe handling system and real-time data monitoring to optimize drilling parameters. For example, the weight on bit, rotation speed, and the mud flow rate will be monitored. This ensures efficient penetration rates and minimizes equipment wear.
